Detect Johne’s Early with Blood Testing from CIS
Testing for Johne’s early provides insight into the herd status and enables decisions to be taken on individual animals.
Through a new blood testing service for Johne’s, samples can be taken from Youngstock so that any infectious calves can be removed to minimise environmental contamination and spread within the herd. It enables positive animals to be segregated and the management of colostrum and calving pens accordingly.
Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP), also known as Johne’s disease, is a chronic, progressive wasting disease caused by infection early in a cow’s life, with clinical signs developing over years.
The CIS accredited laboratory in Telford tests both serum (blood) and milk, with sophisticated screening tools for MAP. The use of blood samples is an effective method for testing calves, heifers and beef animals. Milk testing for large-scale dairy management plans is the more profitable way of running a Johne’s screening program. However, in dairy cows, during drying off or to confirm a milk sample data, blood testing is an alternative consideration.
The Johne’s blood test is UKAS accredited and is available from £5.50 ex VAT per sample. Contact your local CIS Area Manager or call our team on 01923 695319.
